The name Sangam India Limited (SIL) would immediately ring a bell for anyone familiar with the textile industry. As one of the leading producers of PV dyed yarn, cotton, OE yarn and ready-to-stitch fabric, SIL has emerged as one of the most trusted brands in the textile industry. The leading textile conglomerate with an annual turnover of over Rs 2,400 crore and employing over 12,000 personnel boasts of five modern production units with more than 236,000 spindles and 3,000 rotors, spread across Bhilwara district in Rajasthan. The group exports its products to 20 key global markets, making it one of the largest exporters in the Indian textile industry.

The company’s C9 air wear, casual and active wear apparel brand for women is available across 1,000, multi-brand outlets in India and all major e-commerce portals such as Myntra, Amazon, Nykaa, Flipkart, etc. The group’s flagship brand, Sangam Suitings, has been operating through a distribution channel with a pan-India network of 10,000 retailers. We caught up with Managing Director and CEO Dr. S N Modani for an exclusive interview. Dr. Modani holds a Ph.D. in strategic management practices for a sustainable future, along with a M.Sc. with Honours in Chemistry, as well as an MBA qualification along with a Post-Graduate Diploma in Cement Technology from NCBM, Faridabad.

Going into details regarding the group’s manufacturing infrastructure and capacity, Dr. Modani said, “We have five state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities situated in Bhilwara and Chittorgarh in Rajasthan.”

The capacity details are as follows:

• Spinning: 2 80,000 spindles and 3,000 rotors with capacity of 95,000 metric tonnes per annum • Weaving: 229 looms with capacity of 30 million metres PV fabric per annum • Denim: 295 looms with capacity of 48 million metres per annum • Processing: 72 million metres per annum • Garments: 58 knitting machines with capacity of 5 million pieces per annum.

SIL has announced a few expansion projects in the cotton yarn and garments section in recent times. The group has completed the first phase of expansion for the installation of 32,832 spindles for the manufacture of cotton yarn at the Sareri unit in Bhilwara. This was completed in FY22. The company’s second phase of expansion for installation of 32,832 spindles for the manufacture of cotton yarn at Spinning Unit II in village Sareri in Bhilwara is scheduled to be completed in FY23. SIL is investing in 106 circular knitting machines for the manufacturing of seamless garments at Sangam Ventures Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary.

When queried about the new products, innovation and technology advantages offered by the group, Dr. Modani said, “At Sangam India Limited we believe that technology and innovation go hand in hand. We are continuously experimenting and launching new garment blends with the help of research and state-of-the-art machinery. Apart from this, our existing fabric processing division is one of the finest in the industry, giving us an edge over our competitors and our unique range for dyed yarn of over 10,000 shades is also one of the widest varieties available in the market.” According to Dr. Modani, while the overall revenue share of SIL’s domestic operation is 60%, its exports are at a healthy 40% globally across 58 countries.

Pointing out the competitive edge that the company offers and which makes the group the right choice for customers to source from, Dr. Modani stated: “One of the biggest advantages that we as a group have is credibility and transparency. Sangam India is a trusted name amongst customers for delivering products of premium quality and at competitive prices. We have a state-of-the-art production facility when it comes to manufacturing and meeting delivery schedules in time for any order we receive. Our portfolio diversification also adds to our product expertise and know-how. Over the years, we have created a streamlined manufacturing process that helps us create high-value products. This has been possible because we invest heavily in the skill development of our workforce that is well-trained to operate the latest machines and produce quality products.”

The Sangam Group has always been known for its sustainability focus. Elaborating on some of the recent sustainability initiatives, Dr. Modani shared: “In the business of textiles, we always use a lot of dyes and chemicals and are well-aware of their effects on the environment. Hence, we run ETPs and STPs to reduce industrial water contamination and reclaim the water for favourable purposes, following our strict zero discharge policy. We have also installed 12 MW solar power plants as a source of renewable energy for our spinning and denim unit. Going forward, we also plan to increase the use of recycled fibre, leading to lesser consumption of virgin material by using it as a raw material.”

Speaking about the company’s automation focus, Dr. Modani he remarked, “At Sangam India we are continuously upgrading and modernising our infrastructure to bring automation to the production process to increase efficiency and optimise the production capacity. Wherever we plan new expansion, we invest in the latest technology.” As regards the group’s vision for 2025 and beyond, Dr. Modani said, “Our vision is for SIL to be a market leader and have a dominant role, aiming to grow at 15-20% CAGR YoY. But while we try to achieve this goal, we will continue to follow sustainable practices for the business and environment.”
