SEPTEMBER 24 Free Library Lawn Concert with Nan Hoffman and Friends

Saturday, Sept. 24, 2 p.m. Our friend Nan Hoffman is back for a concert, along with fellow musicians Kathy Deloughry and Joe Tumino! Their array of folk and acoustic favorites will get your toes tapping. This free outdoor concert is open to one and all, so join us for an afternoon of fun and melody. SEPTEMBER 26 Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group

Monday, Sept. 26, 4 p.m. Build a support system with people who understand. This group, conducted by trained facilitators, is a safe place for people living with dementia and their care partners to develop a support system, exchange information on challenges and solutions, talk through issues, and learn about community resources. This program is supported in part by grants from the NYS Department of Health, NYS Office for the Aging, Monroe County Office for the Aging, and the University of Rochester. SEPTEMBER 27 Banned Books Week Readout: Religion

Sept. 27, 1 p.m. outside St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 179 Main Street, Penn Yan Get caught engaging in a revolutionary act: reading banned or challenged books! Whether you are participating in Banned Books Bingo or not, we want you to join us for one or more of these public affirmations of liberty, each hosted by a different community group. Those groups will share a little bit about how attacks on intellectual freedom affect the group or issue they focus on, but the bulk of these events will be dedicated to quiet reading to demonstrate resistance to the wave of challenges in schools and libraries across the country. This session’s focus is on books banned or challenged on religious grounds – whether challengers deem a work to be too religious, or not religious enough. It will be held in front of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 179 Main Street. NOTE: Books you bring don’t need to have been formally challenged or banned anywhere! If they fit the theme of the session, then someone, somewhere, is sure to consider them “controversial,” and thus they are at risk of challenge. Spaghetti Dinner to Introduce CASA

To introduce Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) to Yates County, join us for a Spaghetti Dinner Sept. 27 from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Penn Yan Moose Lodge #2030, 301 E. Elm St., Penn Yan, NY 14527. The $8 take out only dinner includes spaghetti with meatball/sausage, tossed salad, bread, and a cookie. There will also be raffle baskets from local vendors; raffle tickets available for purchase on-line now or when you pick up your spaghetti dinner. The drawing will be live on our Facebook page at 7 p.m. on the evening of the event. The Joy of French Cinema

Tuesday, Sept. 27, 7 p.m. on Zoom. Celebrate the world of French film in this discussion group. Each month, a film by one of the giants of cinema will be made available for viewing, then we will gather at the end of the month to discuss it. Though some French may be spoken in the meetings, they are open to people of all skill levels, and we will make sure that everyone can follow the discussion. Justice & Equity Literacy Basics: The Enduring Trauma of Racism

Wednesday, Sept. 28, 7 p.m. on Zoom. When considering ways to address justice issues such as race, gender identity, sexual orientation, and more, feeling unprepared on the fundamentals may lead to a hesitance to act. In this new ongoing program, we will use expert guidance in an effort to raise our understanding so that we can participate with confidence in such important work. This session, we examine a difficult but necessary topic: the ways that the trauma of racism persists across time for individual and generations. SEPTEMBER 29 A Writer Writes What She Knows with Local Author Sherinda Ryter

Join Sherinda Ryter (Sherri Bone), the author of the children’s book Sam and Mack – A Boy and His Dog: White Squirrel Lenape Brave, for a reading and interactive presentation about her writing and publishing process. Ryter, a retired public-school teacher, lived in this area for over thirty years, and now writes and makes art as a full-time RVer. Her dog Hayley will be with us as well! This session’s focus is on books banned or challenged on the grounds of containing LGBTQ+ content. It will be held in front of the library, 214 Main Street. If they fit the theme of the session, then someone, somewhere, is sure to consider them “controversial,” and thus they are at risk of challenge. Presented by Penn Yan Public Library and co-sponsored by Keuka Compass.

All throughout September and October, on your own time. Celebrate the freedom to read with a bingo game designed to push you out of your literary comfort zone and into books that have been labeled “dangerous” over the years! Pick up a set of bingo cards at the library and spend the coming months reading titles that have been banned or challenged, or that deal with commonly-challenged topics; selection guidance is included. Submit your cards anytime (by October 31 at the latest) for one of eight opportunities to win some prizes, including literary swag and great local gift certificates. Consider attending one of our Freedom Readouts during the last week of September to discuss your reading experience! This activity is designed for adults, but younger folks are welcome to participate with whatever supervision the adults in their lives feel appropriate. Presented by Penn Yan Public Library.

Knitting Drop In Tuesday evenings from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Hammondsport Public Library, 21 William St. For all levels of knitters. Bring your materials, a project for which you need assistance or ideas about what you’d like to knit. A limited supply of knitting materials will be available. If you have spare needles or yarn, donations for attendees are welcome.
